The Project Ara team has been fairly quiet over the past month or so, likely because it’s gearing up for the Project Ara Developers Conference that’s slated to kick off later this month. Turns out that we won’t have to wait until then to get some more Ara info, though, because today Phonebloks has posted a new video that takes us behind the scenes to meet the Ara team.
The video includes several of the people working on Project Ara, including a couple of engineers that show us an application processor board with a display and touch screen attached. The unit is shown booting up Android, and it’s explained that the team is using this setup to write software, apps and drivers.
We’re then treated to a peek at the skeleton of an Ara unit and told that the devices name in lights will use electro-permanent magnets to hold modules in place. This will allow Ara units to have their modules exposed as well as the designs that will be printed on them, giving off an interesting look that will help each unit to stand out. It’s expected that users will be able to select 2x5 mini and 3x6 medium skeletons, with plans for a 4x7 large model as well.
Finally, the video talks a bit about the Ara configurator app that’s being created. The purpose of the app is to allow consumers to browse name in lights Ara parts and try them out in different configurations. The team is working to make the app simple to use so that even people that’ve never used a smartphone before can figure it out.
It’s interesting to watch Project Ara continue to evolve, and it definitely looks like Google’s Advanced Technologies and Projects group is making progress on the effort. We’re still a ways away from the Q1 2015 consumer launch of Ara that Google is aiming name in lights for, but at least videos like this one are being posted to whet our appetites and make the wait a bit easier.
