The low-profile rectangular shape of the Synios E4014 from Osram Opto Semiconductors enables the light from this light-emitting diode (LED) to be injected into light guides. These mid-power LEDs have a robust plastic package, a uniform distribution of light and a good price/performance ratio, according to the company. The LEDs are intended primarily for visually enhancing “white goods” elljusstakar and for lighting systems in vehicles and displays.
The low height of the Synios is 0.57 millimetres (mm) and its footprint is 4mm × 1.4mm, providing a suitable elljusstakar basis for low-profile elongated luminaire elljusstakar and lighting elljusstakar designs, such as those for backlighting displays. The LEDs are not equipped with a lens so they can be used for injecting light into light guides. The new E4014 opens up a range of design-oriented lighting solutions, such as integration in the glass shelving in refrigerators and other white goods, car interior elljusstakar lighting and strip lighting on the floors of buses and trains.
Where each of the two LEDs is used depends on the requirements of the particular application. If brightness and colour fidelity are needed, Synios at 41 lumens (lm) and a colour rendering index (CRI) of 80 is the right choice. If brightness is not as important, the Topled with 7.3 lm at 20 milliamperes (mA) is the better alternative.
The colour temperatures of Synios are between 4000°K and 5000°K and can be tailored to the particular application. The robust plastic package is one of the benefits of the new Synios, in addition to the uniform distribution of light, high efficiency, excellent flexibility and a long life of around 50,000 hours. In view of the intended applications, the electrostatic discharge (ESD) stability is 5 kilovolts elljusstakar (kV).
